Enthusiasts are Discovering and Rediscovering Restomods
Whether they are referred to in one word, two-words or hyphenated, Resto Mods are hot. This interesting breed of automobile is seemingly gaining in popularity daily, with everyone from collectors to young enthusiasts embracing the cars. If you haven’t quite caught the wave yet, you may be wondering just what all the fuss is about.
What is a Resto Mod?
A resto-mod (restored-modified) is a classic vehicle that has been restored, but with modern technology and parts. In real estate it would be like taking a 1920s vintage building, and keeping its core architectural characteristics but upgrading it with modern HVAC, security systems, and energy-efficient appliances.
What is the Appeal?
Like any car enthusiast, resto-mod owners will be attracted to these cars for their own reasons. For some it is the appeal of having a stunningly attractive restored classic without the hassles (or expense) of striving for an all-original classic. Parts can be much easier, and more affordable to find for a resto mod. Many enjoy them because since their mechanics and technology is updated, they can be driven more comfortably as daily driver. Rest-mods provide the best of both worlds, owning a classic while enjoying the performance and comforts of a new engine and “toys”.
Flexibility
Perhaps the most popular aspect of a resto mod is the flexibility it provides the owner. This means you can spend money where it is important to you. You can pour it into an attention-grabbing paint job, amazing technology, a muscular engine or impressive tires and wheels. This flexibility also provides another benefit that owners appreciate. Virtually every rest-mod is unique in some way. That “Let me show you this!” aspect of a rest mod is a powerful attraction.
Of course, you’ll also want your restomod to meet all the standards required by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. This can include everything from seat belts and harnesses to airbags, glass and braking systems. These important safety features are critical in assuring your restomod is built to modern standards and can get licensed. As a side note you will also want to make sure your vehicle is insured as a restomod to cover its full value.
How Much Can You Spend on a Resto Mod?
There is a scene in the comedy film classic “Vacation” where Chevy Chase’s character asks a mechanic in the middle of nowhere how much it cost to fix his damaged family truckster. The steely mechanic replies “How much ya got?” The same could apply to a resto-mod depending on your budget. It is not unusual for an owner to end up putting $100,000 or more into an exceptional resto mod, but the entry level can be less.
