Those in search of a first of its generation contemporary collectable sports car should not overlook the 2006 Porsche Cayman S. Born out of the second and third generation Boxster Roadster, this first edition was created by noted designer Pinky Lei. Of course, Porsche has been built around its impeccable designs since the automaker was started by Professor Ferdinand Porsche in 1948 with the Type 356. While dramatic adjustments are rare, Porsche is known for taking the best from previous generations of its cars, while maintaining its distinctive rear hips.
The 2006 Porsche Cayman S was initially positioned in both price and performance between the Boxster S Roadster and the Porsche 911 Carrera Coupe.
Interestingly, the car was not branded from the Cayman Islands but from an alligator-type creature named the caiman. From those first Caymans until today, each has been manufactured in Finland.
The mid-engine 2006 Porsche Cayman S packs a punch with a 3.4-liter, 6-cylinder engine that produces 295 horsepower. It is available both in an automatic and manual transmission and can accelerate from zero to 60 mph in just a tick over 5 seconds. It is a pleasant surprise to note that the Cayman S can get 20 mpg on the streets and up to 28 mpg on the highway. It will also draw an abundance of admiring glances.
For a two-seater, it provides exceptional comfort and can be a good option as a daily driver.
There are similarities between the Cayman S and the Boxster, including the chassis and the front end fenders and hood. Head and taillights are similar as well. The Cayman is a bit taller and longer and boasts a bit more horsepower. The Cayman also has a bit more volume in its rear fender hips than the Boxster.
The rear hatch includes the window and is roomy enough for the family groceries, a weekend’s worth of luggage, and two sets of golf clubs, but not all at once. This is, after all, a Porsche. The no-nonsense interior provides an excellent view of instruments and the road ahead. It is enjoyable to drive and a vehicle you will be proud to call your own.
The original base price of a 2006 Porsche Cayman S hovered around $58,000. The flat-six engine has proven to be reliable, and the Cayman has held its value in line with other models by the automaker.
